Wheat...The recent retreat across the futures complex was reflected
in west coast cash wheat bids in early-week trade, but white wheat held
up relatively well as basis to Chicago strengthened. Harvest reports
have thus far indicated a better that expected yield in the white wheat
crop, with good quality and unusually low protein.
Crop Progress...The Pacific Northwest winter wheat harvest made good
progress under warm and dry conditions over the past week, with roughly
15% of the crop harvested. To date, Idaho shows 20% complete, Oregon is
near the halfway point and Washington is 30% complete. Good to excellent
ratings for Idaho slipped 6 points over the past week to 59%, while the
Washington crop benefitted from precipitation the past few weeks with an
11 point jump to 67%.
Shipments...Weekly export inspections showed wheat movement returned
to a more typical pace last week, coming in at 14.5 million bushels to
put year-to-date shipments at 93 million bushels and 25% behind a year
ago. White wheat was the top mover with 4.7 million bushels, followed
by soft red winter with 3.2 million, hard red spring at 3.1 million and
2.7 million for hard red winter. West coast exporters shipped nearly 6
million bushels of wheat, primarily for Bangladesh, along with nearly
18 million bushels of corn.
