Wheat...A larger than expected cut in wheat acreage from the USDA put
some footing back into the futures complex on Tuesday, and west coast
cash bids followed suit. White wheat basis was a bit defensive against
higher Chicago futures, while protein bids saw basis hold steady. After
being at a 30 cent discount to dark northern spring wheat a month ago,
hard red winter wheat bids are now at a 3 cent premium.
Crop Progress...A return to more seasonal temperatures accompanied by
intermittent rainfall helped improve Pacific Northwest wheat conditions
over the past week, with the three-state index gaining a point to 99% of
average. Good to excellent ratings for Idaho climbed 3% to 82%, Washington
was also up 3% to 67%, and Oregon held at 41%. Spring wheat ratings for
Idaho held at 75% good to excellent while Washington dropped 1% to 60%.
Shipments...Weekly export inspections reported 13.1 million bushels of
wheat shipped off U.S. ports last week, putting year-to-date loadings at
48.9 million bushels and on-par with year-ago levels. White wheat shipped
4.9 million bushels, hard red winter was at 3.3 million and red spring at
3.2 million. West coast exporters loaded out 7.5 million bushels of wheat,
going mostly to South Korea and the Philippines, along with 26.8 million
bushels of corn.
